Italy was the center of the Roman Empire, and the country is still filled with remnants of this historical period. In fact, Italy is home to 44 UNESCO World Heritage sites (including the entire cities of Venice and Verona), more than any other country in the world. Visitors to Italy flock to such archeological wonders as the Colosseum, the destroyed city of Pompeii, Etruscan ruins, the Pantheon, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill and a multitude of excavated churches, temples and obelisks. An Amalfi rental in southern Italy is a great starting point for your sightseeing adventure.

The artwork of the Italian Renaissance masters is world-renowned. Florence is considered by many to be the capital of the Italian art world and is home to Michelangelo's statue of David and other remarkable works by Carravaggio, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and countless other classical and modern artists. Outside of Florence, every major -- and often minor -- city in Italy offers the opportunity to experience masterful artworks. The country's contributions to culture through art, including both visual and performance arts like opera, have been felt through the ages and can still be seen today, notably in the field of design.

Food is an extremely important part of Italian culture. A meal is more than simple nutrition; in Italy, a meal is an event bringing together friends and family for wholesome cooking, robust wines and lingering, lively conversation. Lunch is usually the main meal of the day and often features three full courses followed by a nap. Shops and offices shut down for two to three hours each afternoon, and almost all restaurants (except some catering mainly to tourists) are closed between lunch and dinner, which often does not begin until 8 PM. During afternoon and evening meals the wine flows as freely as the conversation and is the perfect accompaniment to the memorable food.

Within a strongly similar framework, the culture of various regions of the country can vary slightly. A visitor staying in an Amalfi villa will have a different cultural experience than one staying in a Tuscany rental. Coastal areas such as Amalfi, including Sorrento, have rocky beaches and archeological wonders like Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as a fishing village-like air and abundant Limoncello made from locally-grown amalfitano lemons. The mountains, vineyards and olive groves of Tuscany are less crowded than the southern coasts and are the birthplace of the Renaissance, and home to the art center of Florence and five other UNESCO World Heritage sites: the historical centers of Siena, San Gimignano and Pienza, the Cathedral of Pisa and the Val d'Orcia.

Italy is a world center of design and fashion, and appearances are very important in this culture. Italians assume much about a person's social and economic classes based on one's manners and dress. Italy is not a jeans and tee shirt destination. Men and women may not always be dressed to the nines, but always exhibit a sharp sense of pulled-together personal style.

Spread through the Roman Empire, the culture of Italy has infused itself throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. The Italian influence on art, politics, cuisine, design and architecture can be seen throughout the world. See it first-hand on your own visit to this beautiful, historic country.
