Food is an extremely important part of Italian culture. A meal is more than simple nutrition; in Italy, a meal is an event bringing together friends and family for wholesome cooking, robust wines and lingering, lively conversation. Lunch is usually the main meal of the day and often features three full courses followed by a nap. Shops and offices shut down for two to three hours each afternoon, and almost all restaurants (except some catering mainly to tourists) are closed between lunch and dinner, which often does not begin until 8 PM. During afternoon and evening meals the wine flows as freely as the conversation and is the perfect accompaniment to the memorable food.
